IMPHAL, Oct 3 : In a significant breakthrough, secu- rity forces have arrested a senior leader of recently formed Chin Kuki Mizo Army (CKMA) allegedly involved in trafficking weapons and drugs across the Indo-Myanmar border along with a variety of arms and ammunition.
According to a police bulletin, the arrested person has been identified as Paokholen Guite, a resident of P Mongjang Village in Churachandpur and he is a self-styled commander-in-chief of CKMA.
He was arrested on October 1.
Police stated that Paokholen was involved in trafficking weapons and drugs across the Indo-Myanmar border by collaborating with non-Suspension of Operations (SoO) groups, including the United Kuki National Army (UKNA).
He was also involved in extortion activities, according to police.
Two AK 47 rifles, two AK 47 magazines, 31 rounds of 7.62 AK ammunition, 150 rounds of 7.62 SLR/LMG ammunition, Rs one lakh in cash, one bullet proof pouch, one Hyundai Creta and two mobile phones were seized from his possession, said police.
According to various reports, the porous India- Myanmar border poses significant challenges to peace, stability, and economic development due to dramatic increase in drug trafficking, influx of insurgents, and arms trade, all of which worsen the security situation in North East India.
Meanwhile, the PCR said that a team of police which went to apprehend a suspected drug kingpin at T Kotlen village in Sajik Tampak area in Chandel on October 1 was attacked by a mob.
Police said that the situation was resolved with support from Assam Rifles, Central Armed Police Force and local leaders.
Security forces also arrested three cadres of RPF/PLA allegedly involved in extortion and criminal activities on October 1 and 2, said police.
The arrested persons have been identified as Kayenpaibam Lokendro (58) of Konthoujam Awang Leikai, Indrajit Ningthoujam (51) alias Angou of Tairenpokpi Mamang Leikai and Wairokpam Sanahal alias Nongdamba (46) of Yairipok Khoirom Mathak Leikai.
