Police writes to CWC on corporal punishment

IMPHAL, Oct 5 : After an incident of corporal punishment given to students of a hostel surfaced, Lilong police have written to the Child Welfare Committee, Thoubal to take necessary legal action against the warden.
The corporal punishment incident occurred at the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Awasiya Vidyalaya (Boys' Hostel) at Lilong on September 27, said the Lilong police in the letter to the CWC Thoubal.
The warden of the hostel allegedly physically assaulted a group of students inside the hostel premises between 10.40 pm and 11.30 pm of September 27. A total of 15 students were allegedly subjected to severe beatings with a stick, said the police.
Following the incident, some of the students, out of fear, attempted to flee from the hostel campus at night, and they were later rescued by local people, said the police.
Lilong police, in the presence of Medical Officer of Community Health Centre, Lilong, examined and verified the student victims on September 28. The students bore visible marks of injuries. Photographic evidence and medical observations have also been recorded, said the police.
The act of physical assault and use of corporal punishment is a gross violation of the Educational Guidelines of the Department of Education (S), Manipur and cannot be condoned under any circumstance, the Lilong police said, asking the Child Welfare Committee, Thoubal to take necessary action against the accused warden under relevant legal provisions.
