IMPHAL, Oct 6: Keishamthong Assembly Constituency MLA Nishikant Singh Sapam has sought the attention of the Governor and the Chief Secretary to urgently repair National Highway 137-A (Mayai Lambi).
Speaking to reporters at his residence at Thouda Bhabok Leikai today, Nishikant said the deteriorated sections of the Mayai Lambi have caused immense inconveniences to the public and commuters.
He said there have been repeated appeals from the public, particularly from Keishamthong AC, to repair the road.
As a representative of the Constituency, the MLA said, he has also been urging the authorities concerned of the Government to repair the road and address the public grievances.
Acknowledging that a sewerage project is currently being implemented in the area, the MLAs appealed to the Governor to complete the project at the earliest and to reconstruct the road properly.
Nishikant said he understands the grievances of the locals regarding the road and fully supports the stir, launched by them.
He, however, noted that the road reconstruction work was delayed due to the ongoing sewerage project which requires digging manholes.
While the Public Works Department (PWD) is expected to begin filling potholes and start the repairing works on Mayai Lambi, Nishikant said all the roads within Keishamthong AC will soon be developed into concrete roads.
PHED's Sewerage Division's EE S Rahul Dev Sharma, who also attended the press meet, said the completion of the sewerage project has been delayed due to rain.
The depth of a manhole, dug for the project, is around 17/18 feet. The rate of seepage of water into the manhole is high during rains. This is delaying the project, Rahul said.
As the rainy season is ending, there will be good progress with the project. The digging of manholes will be completed as soon as possible, he added.
PWD's National Highway Division-I EE, Y Amarendro informed that a proposal to strengthen the Mayai Lambi road from Wahengbam Leikai to Kakching Lamkhai has been submitted to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways in June this year.
The Department is waiting for the proposal to be approved and sanctioned. In the meantime, the Department is taking up all efforts for proper repair and maintenance of the road, he said.
