IMPHAL, Nov 9: Demanding justice for late physiotherapist Angom Rita, Meira Paibis of Yaiskul blocked the Asian Highway 102 (Imphal- Moreh road) for some time today.
The protest demonstration, demanding arrest of the culprits involved in the murder of Angom Rita, was sudden and it hindered the traffic.
Angom Rita (67) was found killed at her residence at Yaiskul Chingakham Leirak on October 13.
After receiving reports of the womenfolk blocking the road, a team of Imphal police station led by its Officer-in-Charge arrived at the protest site.
Later, a three member team of the Meira Paibi met Imphal West SP Ksh Shivakanta.
After an assurance was given by the SP to nab the culprits involved, the womenfolk suspended the stir and opened the road.
The immediate and unannounced blockade however hindered traffic and caused congestion at many places including Moirangkhom, Thumbu Thong, Singjamei Yumnam Leikai etc.
Retired District and Session Judge Aribam Noutuneshwari, who took part in the protest, said the inability of the police to arrest the culprits involved in the murder is a failure of the entire department.
The murder occurred right under the nose of the police. However, the department has failed to identify and arrest the culprits even after one month, she said. The police must swiftly investigate the case and arrest the culprits, she added. During the protest demonstration, Meira Paibis held placards demanding justice for Angom Rita and calling for the arrest of the culprits involved.
