IMPHAL, Nov 14: Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president K Meghachandra has asserted that it would be better to hold fresh elections after dissolving the current 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly.
The Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) observed the 136th birth anniversary of Jawaharlal Nehru at Congress Bhavan, BT  Road here today.
Replying to queries raised by media persons by the sideline of the function, Meghachandra said that the people of Manipur have nothing to expect from the BJP’s double-engine Government.
The MPCC president said that he cannot imagine any change in the State from the recent visit of BJP National General Secretary (Organisation) BL Santosh and the party’s North East coordinator Dr Sambit Patra.
With the Government unable to restore peace and normalcy even after two years of violence, thousands of IDPs have been living in relief camps under wretched conditions, he said.
There is no indication of any improvement in the law and order situation. At the same time, the level of corruption has been soaring, Meghachandra said.
Instead of deliberating on the core issues like free movement, BL Santosh and Dr Sambit focused on strengthening BJP in the State with a view to the next State Assembly election which is due in 2027.
As such, the people of Manipur have nothing to expect from the two BJP leaders’ visit to the State, he said.
Saying that both democracy and the Constitution have been rendered inapplicable in Manipur, Meghachandra said that it would be far better to dissolve the State Assembly and hold fresh elections.
The PR administration has also failed to implement any meaningful development work, he said.
Speaking at the birth anniversary function, Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader and former Chief Minister Okram Ibobi called upon all Congress workers to work sincerely in order to fulfil the wishes and vision of India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.
Led by CLP leader O Ibobi and MPCC president K Meghachandra, Congress MLAs, ex-Ministers, ex-MLAs, office bearers of several frontal organisations and departments and Congress workers offered floral tributes to the statue of Jawaharlal Nehru as a part of the death anniversary observation.
O Ibobi said that Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was a great personality who took key roles in liberating India from the British colonial yoke.
Jawaharlal Nehru took an active part in the freedom struggle spearheaded by Mahatma Gandhi and he was imprisoned for nine to ten years for his role in the freedom struggle, Ibobi said.
As the first Prime Minister of independent India, Jawaharlal Nehru took pivotal roles in building modern India and he is also known as the architect of modern India, Ibobi said.
For his immense love and compassion for children, November 14, the birthday of Jawaharlal Nehru, is also celebrated as Children’s Day.
The CLP leader said that Congress workers will work relentlessly to fulfil the dreams and vision of Jawaharlal Nehru.
