State observes World Diabetes Day

IMPHAL, Nov 14 : The State level World Diabetes Day was observed today at Hotel Classic Grande, Imphal.
Jointly organised by the Directorate of Health Services and the State Division of National Programme for Prevention and Control of Non Communicable Disease (NP-NCD) of the National Health Mission, the programme was held under a dual theme "Diabetes and Wellbeing" and "Diabetes and Workplace"
Addressing the function, Prof Dr RK Lenin, a prominent Psychiatrist, stated that India is known as the diabetes capital, with over 70 million people living with the disease.
Stating that 12 percent of the 7 lakh people screened under the NP-NCD programme in Manipur were found to have diabetes, he added that diabetes is a public health issue in the State.
Dr Lenin said that chronic stress increases the risk of diabetes, hypertension, heart problems, and many other ailments.
He stated that managing stress and depression is crucial for leading a healthy lifestyle, adding that a person's level of happiness determines their overall health.
Former Health Director Dr O Sanahanbi said that one in every 10 people globally lives with diabetes with half of them undiagnosed, according to the International Diabetes Federation.
She said that diabetes can be considered a silent epidemic in India, with over 130 million people at risk of developing the disease.
Most diabetic individuals are working people, she said, underscoring the need to screen for diabetes at workplaces.
Health Director Dr N Hemantakumar said that strengthening of healthcare services is necessary to fight non communicable diseases.
He said that foundation stones have been laid for super-speciality hospitals in five hill districts, including Jiribam.
He also said that construction of the State Mental Hospital has begun and consultations are underway to establish a State Nephrology Hospital.
During the observance, appreciation certificates were given to some Health officials and other stakeholders who played a key role in the implementation of NP-NCD programmes.
