IMPHAL, Nov 14 : Two pig farms in Kakching district have been designated as containment zones following the detection of African Swine Fever (ASF).
Areas within a 1 km radius of the two farms have been tagged as infected zones, while those within a 10 km radius have been designated as surveillance zones.
The two farms are located at Kakching Turel Wangma Ward No 5 (belonging to M Ramananda Singh) and Moirangthem Leikai Khamlangba Pareng Ward No 6 (belonging to M Barunkumar Singh).
An order issued by Kakching District Magistrate Rohit Anand has imposed restrictions in the infected and surveillance zones under the National Action Plan for Control, Containment and Eradication of ASF (2020) and the Prevention and Control of Infectious and Contagious Diseases in Animals Act, 2009, with immediate effect.
Infected Zone
The restrictions in the infected zones prohibit the movement of any live pig, pig feed, pork, or pork products into or out of the zone.
No carrier of goods or animals shall transport any animals into or out of the infected zone, it said
Saying that no person shall remove any pig (alive or dead) that is infected or suspected to be infected with ASF, the order continued that no person shall transport pig feed, bedding, or other materials, including carcasses, skins, or any parts or products of animals that have come into contact with any animal infected or suspected to be infected with ASF.
It further said that no person, organization, or institution shall hold any animal market, animal fair, animal exhibition, or conduct any activity involving the grouping or gathering of pigs within the zone.
Pigs infected or suspected to be infected with ASF shall not be taken to any market, fair, exhibition, congregation, or public space, it said and added that pigs infected or suspected to be infected with ASF shall be culled to prevent further spread, if deemed necessary by the Joint Director of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry, Kakching.
The Joint Director of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry, Kakching, shall ensure the safe disposal of carcasses in coordination with the Senior Executive Officer of Kakching Municipal Council, it added.
Surveillance Zone
The restriction stated that all restrictions mentioned in the infected zone will be applicable in the surveillance zone too except the animals will not be subject to culling.
However, all pigs in the zone will be subject to intensive surveillance viz clinical, biological and serological surveillance.
It added that intensified surveillance on the domestic pig population adjacent to forest areas will be carried out in consultation with the Forest department and Municipal Council, Kakching.
Clinical symptoms of ASF
Clinical symptoms of ASF, according to a statement issued by the Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Services, include high body temperature (104-105 degree Fahrenheit), offeed, lethargy and difficulty in movement, discharge from nose and mouth, vomiting and diarrhoea (also bloody diarrhoea), difficulty in respiration and congestion/discoloration of skin at different body regions.
The affected pigs may die within 1-3 days to 11-15 days depending on virulent ASF-V strain and high morbidity and mortality rate upto 100 per cent.
No vaccine and drugs are available to prevent and cure ASF.
The Veterinary department advised the people to always maintain biosecurity in pig farming with adequate hygienic measures, deeply bury the carcasses with lime and salt or incinerate if possible and regularly vaccinate pigs against Classical Swine Fever (CSF) disease.
