IMPHAL, Nov 15: It is the duty of every individual to preserve and promote indigenous culture and tradition, for they are "our identity", Enat Yokhatpa Luptin (EYOL) general secretary Mayengbam Dhananjoy has said today.
The EYOL leader made the statement during a public convention held at Tera Loukrakpam Leikai Community Hall on the Manipuri society and its culture and tradition.
Speaking at the event, Dhananjoy said the image of a society is the reflection of its culture and tradition and therefore, they must be protected and preserved.
"Our culture and tradition are our identity. Therefore, every effort must be taken up to preserve and promote them," he said.
Outside influence and alien culture that may harm "our unique identity" must not be adopted and normalised, Dhananjoy said.
There are rituals and customs specific to occasions. Adopting and mixing new styles, rituals and customs brought about by outside influence and other alien culture threatens the very identity and existence of the original and indigenous forms of rituals and customs, Dhananjoy said.
Further, the new styles and trends that have  been adopted and mixed with traditional ritual ceremonies including weddings are costly, and such practices encourage unhealthy competitions in the society, he said.
When development is inevitable with time, care must be taken to avoid a change towards a materialistic society that may harm the indigenous identity, culture and tradition, he added.
Preserving the indigenous culture and tradition in their pristine form is the duty of every individual, he added.
Dubbed as the "Tera Meepham", the public convention discussed several resolutions adopted on August 10, 2024 to preserve indigenous culture and tradition.
EYOL president Thokchom Ibungohal, Neinashang president Chirom Babul, Ideal Club general secretary Ayekpam Lemba, UPDO general secretary Chirom Punshiba and Nalamsang assistant secretary Konthoujam Thoiba attended the convention.
Meanwhile, EYOL, in a statement, said its members have reached an understanding with Sanjenbam Vikram, executive director of Heritage Convent on an issue regarding a wedding ceremony which the latter hosted recently.
During the meeting, the executive director of the Heritage Convent tendered his apology  to the people tweaking a ritual in the wedding ceremony. Further, he has also assured to provide his assistance in efforts to preserve and promote indigenous culture and tradition, EYOL said.
