
MOIRANG, Nov 18: A one-day sensitization programme for school students on "Sangai Conservation" was held today at the auditorium of Advanced Intermediate College, Moirang.
According to a release issued by the Sangai First Foundation (SFF), the event was organised by the Sangai First Foundation (SFF), Manipur, with Y Modhu, Principal of the College, and Dr Kh Samungou, Managing Trustee of the foundation, gracing the occasion as the presidium members.
During the programme, K Jugeshor, vice-president of SfF, delivered an insightful lecture on the current status of the endangered Sangai deer and its fragile habitat at Keibul Lamjao Floating National Park.
He also shed light on the adverse impacts of the Ithai Barrage on the survival of the species and the ecological balance of the park.
Dr Kh Samungou further elaborated on the historical, socio-cultural, and socio-economic significance of the Sangai, urging students to understand the importance of conserving the natural biodiversity heritage of Manipur.
As part of the event, a written quiz competition was also conducted with the participation of 53 students. Eight meritorious students were selected as winners and will be felicitated during the 2nd Sangai Day celebration scheduled for December 10, 2025.
Teachers and students also took a collective pledge, reaffirming their commitment to protect the environment, biodiversity, and the Sangai.
As part of the programme, a set of books authored by Dr Kh Samungou was handed over to the College to benefit students and promote further learning and research on the Sangai.
In his closing remarks, principal Y Modhu expressed his gratitude to the Sangai First Foundation, Manipur, for selecting the College as a partner in this important initiative, which aims to educate and empower students as guardians of biodiversity and Sangai.
