IMPHAL, Nov 1: There is not a single Cardiothoracic Surgeon nor any Cath-lab (Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory) at JNIMS although it is the biggest hospital under the State Government.
Taking strong exception to this acute shortage of manpower and equipment, the Uripok Apunba Lup (UAL) has stated that they would file a PIL at the High Court of Manipur if JNIMS does not revamp its manpower and infrastructure at the earliest.
Speaking to media persons at Manipur Press Club here today, UAL vice-president Khwairakpam Tarun- kumar said that they filed an application under the RTI Act on August 27, 2025 seeking details of JNIMS Hospital’s manpower and the facilities available at the hospital.
The reply to the RTI application was rather disappointing.
The reply revealed that there is not a single Cardiothoracic Surgeon with MS, MCh qualification nor any Cath-Lab, Tarun- kumar said.
Pointing out that there is only one Nephrologist in the hospital, he appealed to the authority concerned to see that at least three Nephro-logists are there at JNIMS Hospital.
He said that absence of adequate manpower, equipment and infrastructure at Government hospitals is a matter of grave concern for the people, particularly those belonging to economically weaker sections. Even though some economically sound families can afford private hospitals, the vast majority of the people cannot afford private hospitals.
The Government must see that its hospitals are well-staffed and adequately equipped so that they can cater to the healthcare requirements of the vast majority of people, Tarunkumar said.
Citing the Supreme Court’s directive that the right to health must be protected and Union Health and Family Welfare Minister JP Nadda’s announcement that there is no dearth of funds for developing healthcare facilities, the UAL vice-president urged the authorities to look into and make up the shortages and requirements of Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) Hospital.
He further urged the Government to look into the complaint that the Kamjong District Hospital has been facing shortage of doctors and staff.
Considering the difficulties faced by the people of Kamjong district at times of illness or medical problems, the Health Department must urgently provide all the requirements of Kamjong District Hospital, he added.
