Court sends Senior Accounts Officer to CBI's custody for allegedly accepting bribe

IMPHAL, Nov 19 : The Special Judge (Prevention of Corruption), Imphal West, today remanded Senior Accounts Officer Irom Bishorjit Singh of the office of the Principal Accountant (A&E), GOE Section, to three days’ CBI custody after he was allegedly caught red-handed accepting a bribe of Rs 10,000 on November 18.
Accused Bishorjit, s/o of Late Bhimo Singh of Haobam Marak Irom Leikai was produced before the Court by a team of the CBI’s Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB), Imphal.
Public Prosecutor (PP) for the CBI informed the Court that a written complaint was lodged on November 17 alleging that the complainant’s MACP file had been pending for a long time in the Auditor General’s office.
The accused, posted in the GOE section and handling the file, allegedly demanded Rs 20,000 as bribe to clear it.
The accused was caught red-handed inside his office cabin while accepting Rs 10,000 as payment of the demanded bribe, the PP claimed and added that the bribe amount was recovered in the presence of witnesses.
The accused was formally taken into custody after completion of legal formalities.
The prosecution submitted that custodial interrogation was essential to unearth a larger conspiracy, record the accused’s voice samples and trace proceeds of earlier crimes.
After hearing the submissions of the CBI and perusal of the case records, the Special Judge found the agency’s prayer justified and remanded Bishorjit to CBI custody till November 21.
