IMPHAL, Nov 20 : The People’s Progressive Alliance Manipur (PPAM) has expressed serious concern over the State Government’s decision to proceed with the Sangai Festival despite the ongoing humanitarian and political crisis in Manipur.
In a statement, PPAM said that civil society organisations across the State have already condemned the move, noting that the Government has failed to address the plight of internally displaced persons (IDPs), many of whom continue to live in precarious conditions.
In this context, PPAM questioned the 59 elected MLAs , who publicly claim to support the formation of a “popular Government” yet remain unwilling to take responsibility for the worsening situation on the ground.
PPAM urged the MLAs to clarify their position and act in accordance with the mandate and expectations of the people.
PPAM also expressed concern over the Government’s decision to host a festival when the core issues confronting Manipur remain unresolved.
The restriction on free movement along the National Highways occurring under the watch of Central security forces has severely disrupted essential supplies, and destabilised the State.
PPAM representatives had also conveyed to the Chief Secretary during a meeting yesterday that going ahead with the Sangai Festival at this point of time was inappropriate, added the statement.
All responsible representatives must prioritize restoring normalcy, resolving the IDP crisis, and addressing core issues before organising a festival, it added.
