JNIMS hosts intl meet on palliative care

IMPHAL, Nov 22 : The 5th PALLICON 2025, an international conference on palliative care, was  held today at the auditorium of Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS), Imphal, with the partici-pation of over 600 delegates.
Organised by the National Health Mission, Directorate of Health Services, Palliative Care Society Imphal (PCSI), and the Institute of Palliative Medi- cine (IPM), the conference was held under the theme: “Every Life Matters: Universal Access to Palliative Care.”
The event featured eight faculty members from the United Kingdom and various Indian States, along with several eminent palliative care experts from Manipur.
Addressing the conference, Health Director Dr N Hemantakumar underscored the need to deepen understanding of palliative care and ensure its integration into the mainstream health-care system.
He stated that the conference was organised to share knowledge and best practices in palliative care to ensure patients suffering from serious illnesses receive compassionate and dignified support.
Dr Hemantakumar added that the Government is working to establish dedicated trauma centres and intensive care units in Government hospitals, including at the district level.
JNIMS Director Prof Dr L Usharani also attended the programme.
She emphasised the urgent need to raise community awareness about palliative care, stating that greater public understanding is essential for ensuring timely access to these services. Delivering the keynote address, Dr RK Lenin, vice president of the Palliative Care Society, Imphal, stated that palliative care is the compassionate practice of treating people living with life-threatening illnesses and their families to improve the quality of their lives.
Saying that the palliative care movement began in India in 2012 and in Manipur in 2015, he added that the conference was held to raise community awareness on the benefits of palliative care. PCSI president Jugindro Sorokhaibam also attended the programme, among others.
During the programme, Dr Lenin presented an award dedicated to his parents to Laishram Sanatombi, a nurse at Shija Hospitals in recognition of her contribution to palliative care.
The award comprised Rs 5,000, a citation and a shawl.
