Zalaithang FC win CRPF-organised Khelo India Football Tournament

KANGPOKPI, Nov 21 : Khelo India Football Tournament, organized by 112 Bn CRPF Kangpokpi in collaboration with the South Changoubung Youth Club (SCYC), concluded successfully at the S Changoubung playground on Thursday, with Zalaithang Football Club clinching the championship title after an impressive 3–1 victory over Maohing Youth Club in the final match.
The five-day tournament, supported by the Sports Authority of India (SAI), began on November 17 with a vibrant opening ceremony that underscored the Government of India’s continued efforts to nurture grassroots sporting talent across Manipur.
Sixteen dynamic teams from across the district competed in 15 action-packed knockout matches.
The closing ceremony was attended by DIG CRPF Kangpokpi, Rajesh Kumar, as chief guest. The event was also attended by N Shokhongam Baite ADC/ADM Kangpokpi; Abhinav, IPS, SP Kangpokpi; R.K. Baruah, Commandant CRPF Kangpokpi; Mangkholet Haokip, Chief Manager SBI Kangpokpi; village chiefs, youth leaders, women leaders of S Changoubung, and officials of the CRPF.
The final match commenced after an inspection by dignitaries, followed by the ceremonial kickoff by the DIG CRPF.
Zalaithang FC lifted the champions’ trophy, along with Rs 25,000 in cash, medals, and certificates. Maohing Youth Club secured the runners-up title, receiving a trophy, Rs 15,000, medals, and certificates.
Individual awards were presented to Khaigoumang of Maohing Youth Club (Top Scorer); Ngamsanglen of Zalaithang FC (Best Goalkeeper); and Kamgouthang of Zalaithang FC (Best Player of the Tournament).
Speaking to the media after the prize distribution, DIG Rajesh Kumar said the Khelo India initiative under the aegis of the IG M&N Sector CRPF reflects a deep commitment to promoting sports across Manipur.
“This tournament provides a golden opportunity for young players to showcase their talent. Those selected will be taken up by Khelo India sports authorities for intensive training and may eventually represent India,” he stated.
Addressing Manipur’s challenging socio-political environment, he added, “For the past two and a half years, Manipur has been passing through a very critical phase. The CRPF remains fully committed to restoring peace and tranquillity, irrespective of caste or creed. We urge all citizens to rise above differences, strengthen unity, and help build a developed India in the years to come.”
CRPF launches Cricket Tournament to promote peace and harmony
In a parallel effort to promote peace through sports, the Kangpokpi District Cricket Tournament also kicked off with great enthusiasm at the Damdei Christian College ground.
The tournament is being organized by 94 Bn CRPF under the Khelo India scheme of the Government of India, under the aegis of the IG Manipur and Nagaland Sector CRPF and the guidance of DIG CRPF Kangpokpi.
Twelve teams from across Kangpokpi district are participating in the tournament.
The opening ceremony was attended by Mahesh Chaudhari, IAS, DC Kangpokpi, as chief guest, along with DIG CRPF Kangpokpi Rajesh Kumar; SP Kangpokpi Abhinav IPS; Commandant RK Baruah, and officers of 94 Bn CRPF.
Village chiefs from Damdei, L Khenjang, Charhazare, Motbung, and Shantipur were also present.
Declaring the tournament open, the DC highlighted the transformative power of sports. He emphasized that sports instill discipline, unity, and resilience in youth, and play a crucial role in strengthening harmony in society.
In the opening match, Charhazare defeated Damdei by 33 runs, marking the beginning of an exciting series of matches ahead.
