SUP bags seized

IMPHAL, Nov 23 :A joint team of Manipur Pollution Control Board (MPCB), Imphal Municipal Corporation (IMC), and police seized a large quantity of single-use plastic carry bags at Mantripukhri area today.
The banned plastic bags were being transported in a truck bearing an Assam registration number.
The driver has been identified as Nurjul Islam (40), a resident of Golibanda, Assam.
Speaking to the media, MPCB Member Secretary Waikhom Roshan stated that single-use plastic items are banned in Manipur, and the Government has been intensifying its drive against plastic pollution. He further informed that, acting on specific intelligence, the authorities had been tracking the truck carrying the plastic bags since it entered from the Sekmai area. The vehicle was intercepted at Mantripukhri, and the entire consignment of plastic carry bags was seized, he added. Waikhom Roshan further stated that about 130 sackloads of single-use plastic carry bags each weighing approximately 30 kgs were seized. Saying that the operation will continue to apprehend others involved in smuggling these banned items into the State, he appealed to the public to extend full cooperation to the Government in its efforts to combat plastic pollution and protect the environment.
