IMPHAL, Nov 23: In a very successful operation against drug trafficking, security forces have arrested a Kuki village chief from Kangpokpi district and recovered nearly 1,000 grams of opium from his possession today.
The arrested chief of Gunphaibung village, under Saikul PS, has been identified as Lunkhohao Kipgen (43).
Lunkhohao Kipgen was arrested from Bongmoul village, Kangpokpi district.
From his possession, security forces recovered 986 grams of opium and a mobile phone, said Manipur Police.
Notably, the arrest of the Kuki village chief comes a day after security forces launched an operation and destroyed 41 acres of poppy plantation at the hill range of Kotlen village under Kangpokpi district.
Personnel of the Forest Department and Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) took part in the operation.
During the operation, the security forces destroyed 23 huts, 9 bags of fertilizers, 11 herbicide packets, 4 bags of salt and other cultivation equipment found at the plantation sites, said Manipur Police.
In another operation today, security forces arrested one drug peddler identified as Sheikh Basir Ahamad and seized heroin powder weighing 74 grams.
Sheikh Basir Ahamad hails from Lilong Nungei, Thoubal district.
He was arrested from Moirang police station gate check point. From his possession, the security forces seized three soap cases containing heroin powder weighing approximately 74 grams, said the Manipur Police.
