IMPHAL, Nov 25 : To make climate related data readily available to the public, steps are underway to set up a dedicated cell at the Directorate of Environment & Climate Change, Porompat, said Director Dr T Brajakumar Singh.
He made the statement at the 4th interaction event for the 6th Media Fellowship Programme (2025-26) on Climate Change Reporting in Manipur held at the main conference hall of the Directorate of Environment and Climate Change.
Addressing the gathering, Dr T Brajakumar said the Directorate is preparing to set up a cell dedicated to climate related data to overcome challenges such as incomplete and missing data.
Different departments have also started consultative talks in this connection.
Stating that their goal is to make all environment related data available at the cell, he remarked steps are being taken in coordination with other departments for collection of data.
If their efforts prove to be successful, then issues of missing and incomplete data with regards to the environment will be solved, he added.
Speaking as the resource person, Dr Y Premchandra Singh, Joint Director (Planning) & SNO NCD/Telemedicine/ICU & Trauma Care, Directorate of Health Services delivered a lecture on the topic "Health and Climate Change".
Maintaining that climate change is one of the biggest threats to human health in the 21st century, he said it is impacting human lives and health in a variety of ways.
Climate change impacts health directly, through increased intensity and frequency of extreme weather events (such as heatwaves, floods and bushfires); and indirectly, through worsening air quality, changes in the spread of infectious diseases, threats to essential ingredients of good health-safe drinking water, nutritious food supply, safe shelter and effects on mental health, he said.
Dr Premananda raised a call for collective effort to combat the impacts of climate change on human health.
The event was attended by Dr N Sanamacha Meetei, Development Officer, Directorate of Environment & Climate Change, and notable senior journalists Khogendra Khomdram (Editor of The Sangai Express), Irengbam Arun, Salam Rajesh, Pradip Phanjoubam and among others.
