Community service for 5 ltr mustard oil theft

IMPHAL, Nov 26: In a rare case, a 22-year old youth has been sentenced to one month of community service for stealing five litres of mustard oil.
Pusam Zasir (22) s/o P Achouba of Lilong Chingjao was produced before the Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate, Imphal West by a team of City police station along with a charge sheet for summary trial.
An APP of the State submitted that today morning at around 6.30 am, one ASI of City police Station and his team were on patrolling duty at Paona Bazar.
As they reached near Thakurbari Gali, an unknown person who allegedly appeared to be a drug user was seen with a bottle of mustard oil.
On seeing the police, the person tried to escape from the area.
Taking due note of the suspicious nature of the man, the police team detained him.
On verification, the man was identified as Pusam Zasir s/o P Achouba of Lilong Chingjao and he disclosed that the mustard oil which he was carrying was stolen from Thakurbari Temple, Paona Bazar.
During interrogation, the convict admitted to have committed the charge levelled against him and it was learnt that the convict is a habitual drug user.
The Court, after hearing the submission of the APP, the defence counsel and the convict who pleaded guilty for committing the offence, sentenced the convict to carry out community service at Khwairamband Keithel for one month. In default of carrying out the community service, the convict has to undergo simple imprisonment for one month, the Court ordered.
