DESAM seeks DC's attention
IMPHAL, Nov 26: Taking serious note of frequent accidents including the one in Thoubal yesterday that killed one female student and seriously injured another, the Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) Thoubal District Council has written to the district's Deputy Commissioner seeking appropriate measures to avoid accidents and ease traffic.
In its letter to the DC Thoubal, the DESAM identified accident prone areas along the Asian Highway-1 and urged the district administration to install traffic signal lights.
Traffic signal light systems may be installed at the Waikhom Mani Girls' College-Thoubal College Crossing, Thoubal Melaground Crossing, Khangabok District Hospital Crossing, Wangjing- Heirok Crossing, Yairipok Bazar Crossing and Khongjom Bazar Langathel Crossing, it said.
These junctions are some of the busiest points in the district and pose high risk of accidents occurring during school hours and emergencies.
Installing traffic signal lights at these points will help regulate vehicular flow, ensure safety of pedestrians, especially students and reduce accidents, DESAM said.
It also urged the DC to deploy traffic police personnel at the locations, especially during peak hours.
DESAM's request to the DC came after a police bus hit and killed one female student and injured another on AH-1 near Waikhom Mani Girls' College.
The deceased student has been identified as Singamayum Sarina, daughter of Md Azimuddin of Yairipok Singa.
The other receiving treatment at Raj Medicity has been identified as Singamayum Nasima, daughter of Md Zamin Khan of Yairipok Singa.
