Tamenglong, Nov 27 : Under the initiative of DFO Tamenglong, Rainforest Club, Tamenglong in collaboration with Tamenglong Forest Division and 6th Assam Rifles conducted Amur Falcon Run 2025 to mark a decade of their conservation in the district.
Many participated and completed the 10 km run, which was followed by an interactive awareness session conducted to educate participants about the ecological significance, migration pattern, and conservation needs of the Amur Falcons.
Satellite transmitter tagging of the falcons has been extremely successful this year.
Three Amur Falcons, namely, Apapang (named after a hillock of roosting sites in Chiuluan village), Ahu (name for Barak River in Rongmei dialect) and Alang (name for Irang River in Rongmei dialect) have put Manipur in the world map of conservation.
In a record time of 7 days, all three tagged Amur Falcons reached Africa after crossing the Arabian Sea, flying non-stop for three days.
As on November 26, 2025, Apapang is in Zambia, Alang in Tanzania and Ahu is still in Somalia.
It is also worth noting that Rainforest Club, Tamenglong founder Chambo Gonmei was recently awarded the Guardians of Himalayas Award 2025 at the 7th edition of the Dehradun Literature Festival held at Doon International School, Dehradun on November 16.
According to experts, the Amur Falcons travel from Siberia and Mongolia, pass through China, and then make a vital halt in Tamenglong, where they rest and feed before continuing their journey across the Indian subcontinent, crossing the vast Indian Ocean, and finally reaching Southern Africa. This remarkable route makes Tamenglong one of the most important conservation sites in their migratory cycle, according to a press note issued by IGAR (S).
Amur Falcon Run 2025 emphasised community involvement in protecting these seasonal visitors, who play an essential role in maintaining ecological balance. It also reaffirmed the district’s commitment to safeguarding wildlife and preserving Tamenglong as a safe haven for these extraordinary travellers.
