IMPHAL, Nov 28: A KYC (Know Your Customer) drive has been launched for people who got LPG connections under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY).
So far, none of the customers who got LPG connection under the scheme deserve the benefit.
Around 2.5 lakh women have been given LPG connections under PMUY in Manipur, sources said.
Notably, PMUY was first launched on May 1, 2026 in Uttar Pradesh with an initial target of giving LPG connection to 75 lakh women across the country.
The scheme was launched with the primary objective of enabling women belonging to economically weaker families switch from firewood and cow dung cakes to LPG for cooking and thus reduce the health hazards posed by continuous exposure to smoke.
Implementation of PMUY was halted at the fag end of 2023 and it remains suspended till date.
Now, the Government of India has initiated due procedure to resume the scheme.
PMUY 2.0 has already set a target of giving LPG connection to 25 lakh families across the country, said the sources.
Under PMUY 2.0, LPG connection will no longer be free.
As per PMUY guidelines,  beneficiaries must be those people who cannot afford cars, two-wheelers and even mobile phones and their monthly income should not exceed Rs 10,000.
However, some of the PMUY beneficiaries have been found to be owning luxury cars like Fortuner. In one instance, a beneficiary, when contacted over mobile phone, said that she was in Bangkok, said the sources.
Under PMUY 2.0, a sum of Rs 2200 will be charged for LPG connection, and in case, the beneficiaries are found to be ineligible for the scheme, LPG stoves and cylinders given to them will be seized/recovered, according to the sources.
There are many reports of ineligible women taking the benefit of PMUY fraudulently.
Taking serious note of this fraudulent practice, the IOCL has developed a system which can identify whether an applicant of PMUY belongs to the poorest of the poor or are eligible.
As such, there will be little room for fraudulent practices as and when PMUY 2.0 is implemented, said the sources.
