IMPHAL, Nov 2: The 68th birth anniversary of Irengbam Chaoren, president of the proscribed Revolutionary People’s Front (RPF) was observed today at Manipur University auditorium under the aegis of the Irengbam Chaoren Memorial Trust (ICMT).
DMU’s former Vice Chancellor Prof N Rajmuhon, ICMT president Irengbam Bilashini, Symbiosis Law College, Pune Assistant Professor Dr Malem Mangal Laishram, All India E Insaaf secretary Md Islahuddin, Core Committee finance secretary Julia Shinglai and MUSU general secretary Mayang-lambam Malemnganba attended the function as chief guest, president and guests of honour respectively.
Offering of floral tributes to the late revolutionary leader, observation of silence by the gathering, memorial lecture and distribution of prizes of essay competition were the main features of the death anniversary function.
Giving the keynote address of the function, ICMT trustee member Ph Deban said that Irengbam Chaoren was the first son of late Irengbam Ibomcha and Tongbram Ningol Jamuna of Khagempalli Huidrom Leikai.
Since childhood, Chaoren was very respectful and polite to his parents as well as all elders.  He was loved and respected by the people of his locality as well as friends and peers, Deban said.
At the age of 17/18, Irengbam Chaoren started dreaming for a new, self-reliant Manipur, and he took part in many people’s movements.
From that moment on, he took the momentous responsibility of delivering a new way of life to the people of Manipur with an unshakable commitment till his last breath, Deban said.
He said that the 68th birth anniversary function was being observed in commemoration of the activities and achievements made by Irengbam Chaoren for Manipur.
In memory of Irengbam Chaoren and in pursuit of his vision, the ICMT has been organising several activities under the theme “Let’s know our motherland” since 2024.
Ahead of the second birth anniversary function, an essay competition for students was organised.
As desired by late Irengbam Chaoren, the essay competition was organised to give a platform to young students and youth to study the history of Manipur, its political trajectory, economy and culture, Ph Deban Sharma said.
Irengbam Chaoren’s halo is only growing brighter after his demise and his absence is being felt more acutely now when Manipur is passing through a very critical phase, he said.
The late revolutionary leader worked tirelessly for Manipur with a far-sighted vision.
He worked tirelessly to build strong bonds among all communities living together in Manipur, keep youth strong and healthy, enhance the State’s productivity and protect the environment, Deban said.
Later, prizes were distributed to winners of the essay competition held on the topic “Political status of Manipur 1947-49”.
