IMPHAL, Nov 2 : Three new caves have been discovered at Keikao Village (Namkaoluang) in Tamenglong district.
Known as Arai Bat Caves, they are situated about 27 km from Tamenglong district headquarters and another 5 km from Keikao Village.
A team comprising media persons, Forest officials, and village residents recently inspected the caves.
Speaking to the media, Keikao Village chairman Kadirei Kamei said the caves are ancient but were discovered only a few months ago.
He mentioned that some students visited the caves recently, but the roads connecting Keikao Village to the caves are in very poor condition.
The village chairman added that the first cave is about 400 feet long, while the lengths of the other two have not yet been determined.
He further stated that explorers ventured up to 30 feet into the two caves but could not proceed further due to waterlogging, narrow passages, darkness, and a foul smell.
He added that two varieties of bats inhabit the caves.
Tamenglong Divisional Forest Officer Kh Hitler Singh said that the Government has initiated efforts to develop the Arai Caves as an eco-tourism destination.
He added that the caves are located approximately 10 km from Khongsang, and visitors will be able to reach them easily for sightseeing once the Imphal-Jiribam railway service becomes fully operational.
