IMPHAL, Nov 2: Thang-Ta is the identity of Manipur society. It nurtures discipline, harmony, and personal growth, said MP Leishemba Sanajaoba at the 42nd foundation day of Achipa Thang-Ta Shindam Sanglen today. The foundation day was celebrated with grandeur and patriotic fervour at Bal Vidya Mandir, Palace Compound, Imphal.
Addressing the gathering, Leishemba underscored the deep cultural and historical connection between the Manipuri people and the traditional martial art form, Thang-Ta.
He said, “Thang-Ta is the identity of our society — it nurtures discipline, harmony, and personal growth.”
Thang-Ta and the Manipuri pony have been the twin guardians of Manipur’s sovereignty and civilization for over 5,000 years, preserving the spirit and valour of its people, he said.
“Thang-Ta is not just a martial skill but a way of life. It teaches discipline, moral strength, and unity. These values have allowed Manipur to flourish for millennia and must be passed on to future generations,” he remarked.
Leishemba also highlighted the historical significance of Sagol Kangjei (Polo), which originated in Manipur around 3100 BC. He said the global sport was gifted to the world by Manipur. Reflecting on Manipur’s martial history, he said, “In ancient times, Manipur stood strong even against mighty empires like China, Assam, and Tripura — with the strength of our Manipuri pony, the skill of Thang-Ta, and the courage of Arambai warriors.”
Expressing deep concern over the present condition of the Manipuri pony, he lamented that the population has dropped to below 1,000, with only about 200 healthy ponies remaining.
He described the pony as a sacred companion of Manipuri warriors and a symbol of the State’s identity.
“We cannot repay the debt of our Manipuri pony even if we were born seven times over. I believe the Manipuri pony deserves to be declared the State Animal of Manipur, replacing the Sangai, which has not contributed directly to our history or National development,” he asserted.
Addressing the current unrest in the State, Leishemba said the ongoing conflict in Manipur should not be viewed merely as a regional disturbance but as “a war waged against Bharat.”
He praised the people of Manipur for their courage and resilience, saying they are fighting selflessly to defend the integrity of the Nation.
“The people of Manipur are fighting not just for their land but for Bharat. The indomitable spirit of the Manipuris, inherited through centuries of struggle, continues to protect our motherland,” he said.
The programme featured Thang-Ta demonstrations by young practitioners showcasing the agility, discipline, and artistry of the martial form. Students performed synchronized displays, symbolizing unity, courage, and devotion to the motherland.
A floral tribute was paid to the portrait of Yumnam Babu Mangang, who founded the Achipa Thang-Ta Shindam Shanglen.
Brahmacharimayum Bilki Sharma, acting president of Achipa Thang-Ta Shindam Shanglen; Ningthoujam Ajitkumar, president, KIMACS and Seetharam Bhat, organising secretary of Shiksha Vikash Samiti Manipur, Thang-Ta instructors, and many martial arts enthusiasts attended the event.
