IMPHAL, Nov 3: Regarding the demolition of Manipur Rajbari, the AMSU has raised a four-point proposal to the Government of Manipur.
The foremost point of the proposal is the constitution of a reconstruction and preservation committee with experts and representatives of AMSU, Shillong Manipuri Students’ Union (SMSU) and MECS as its members.
The second point proposes reconstruction of Manipur Rajbari at the same spot where it once stood in the same structure and design as its previous self by using old materials as far as possible.
Fencing the compound of Manipur Rajbari after its reconstruction and granting access to the new building only to those people who have been given permission for the same, was the third point of the proposal.
Declaration of Manipur Rajbari as a heritage site, was the fourth point of the proposal.
This proposal was raised by AMSU secretary general S Lanba Luwang at the 49th Freshers’ Meet cum Ningol Chakkouba 2025 organised by SMSU at State Central Library, Shillong on November 2.
Other members of AMSU were also present at the event.
According to a press release issued by AMSU assistant publicity and information secretary Ngangom Nihen, the Manipur Rajbari was demolished by Art & Culture Department, PDA and M/S Meitei Construction on the sly with an intention to transform the history of Manipur into a folktale.
The Manipur Rajbari, built in 1930, was a living historical evidence of the Merger Agreement signed between the Dominion of India and Manipur king Bodhchandra on September 21, 1949.
By demolishing the building, the living historical evidence was destroyed and it smacked of complete disrespect for the people of Manipur. Demolition of the Manipur Rajbari on the sly was a crime against humanity and history, it said.
