Eklavya Model Residential School inaugurated at Riha village
IMPHAL, Nov 5 (OSR/DIO): A significant milestone in strengthening tribal education was marked today with the inauguration of the first Eklavya Model Residential School (EMRS) of Kamjong district at Riha village and subsequent commencement of classes.
Eklavya Model Residential Schools are a network of schools established in remote tribal areas under the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, Government of India to provide quality education to tribal children.
In Manipur, these schools have been set up at Sapermeina and Tamenglong and efforts are underway for another at Moreh.
Phungyar AC (ST) MLA Leishiyo Keishing Leishiyo Keishing presided over the inaugural ceremony as chief guest, in the presence of Rangnamei Rang Peter, Deputy Commissioner Kamjong, along with SDOs, SDCs and District Level Officers. School authorities, community leaders, and villagers also attended the programme.
The event commenced with a ribbon-cutting ceremony by MLA Leishiyo Keishing, followed by a welcome address by Charuk Haji, who highlighted the transformative role of EMRS in expanding access to quality education for tribal students in the region.
Addressing the gathering, MLA Leishiyo Keishing expressed gratitude to the people of Riha and acknowledged their support in establishing the institution. He stressed the importance of value-based and disciplined education to nurture responsible and committed citizens.
Noting that one-third of the students enrolled in the school are from Riha village, he encouraged teachers and caretakers to mentor students with dedication and urged community elders to continue extending their cooperation.
Aside from regular academic activities, attending church and offering prayers will also be a part of school life, said the MLA.
In his remarks, DC Rangnamei Rang Peter underscored the significance of quality education in rural and tribal areas. He said that admission to the school was done through an entrance test adding that many students are currently in the waiting list.
He highlighted that EMRS, with its specialized teacher-student ratio and residential facilities, will provide conducive learning conditions and help shape future leaders.
He encouraged educators to strive towards excellence in imparting knowledge and character development.
