IMPHAL, Nov 6: Several quarters have questioned whether the State Government is prepared to comply with the order passed by the Supreme Court in September 2025 regarding reservation in appointment in both Central and State Governments for weaker sections of the society.
Sources said that the State Government ought to comply with the order passed by the apex Court.
In order to empower weaker sections of the society, seats are reserved for economically weaker sections in appointment to Central and State Government jobs.
For the State of Manipur, 31 per cent is reserved for Scheduled Tribes, 17 per cent for OBC, 2 per cent for Scheduled Castes and 10 per cent for Economically Weaker Section (EWS).
Apart from enjoying seat reservation, candidates belonging to these categories of the society pay less during submission of form for interview as compared to General candidates.
In another word, candidates belonging to ST and SC start enjoying benefits right from the stage of form submission, said the sources.
As per the Manipur reservation policy, if ST/SC candidates secure marks comparable with General candidates during exams or interviews, the ST/SC candidates will go to the General category and the reserved seats vacated by them will go to other ST/SC candidates. Thus the ST/SC candidates are given extra privileges.
However, the order passed by the Supreme Court in September categorically stated that no such extra privileges should be given to ST/SC candidates.
The apex Court’s particular order stated that ST/SC candidates who are already given the privileges of age relaxation and lesser exam fees must not transcend the reserved category, and move to General category, said the sources.
The Supreme Court’s order came as a big relief to the General category people who have been facing several disadvantages for a long time.
The sources said that the Department of Personnel must take up necessary steps in order to implement the apex Court’s order.
The Department of Personnel must issue an order to this effect and forward the same to all departments before the departments can incorporate the same order in their recruitment rules.
But so far, the Department of Personnel has not taken up any such steps, said the sources.
