Babina successfully treats mid-aortic syndrome case

IMPHAL, Dec 1: Babina Hospital has achieved a significant milestone in cardiac healthcare with the successful treatment of seven patients with congenital and complex heart conditions including a rare mid-aortic syndrome case.
The first set of device closure procedures was conducted on November 23, followed by three open-heart surgeries on November 25 and 26, 2025, marking the hospital’s first full series of congenital cardiac interventions.
Among the noteworthy cases was a 32-year-old woman diagnosed with Mid-Aortic Syndrome, a rare condition affecting only 0.5–2% of the population, said a press release issued by Babina Hospital, PR & Media Coordinator Pramod Ningombam.
She presented with severe narrowing of the abdominal aorta, restricting blood flow to the lower body.
An endovascular procedure performed under Cath Lab guidance by Dr Lukram Sidartha along with a visiting team of experts successfully restored normal blood flow. The patient was discharged soon after, marking one of the hospital’s first treatments of this nature.
Three additional patients with congenital heart defects, one with an Atrial Septal Defect (ASD) and two with Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA), also underwent device closure at the Cath Lab. The newly installed systems at the facility allow for greater procedural precision and smoother recovery for patients, it said.
The open-heart surgeries were supported by the 5-chamber STOCKERT bypass machine, which can be extended up to seven chambers for complex cases.
The surgical team operated on a patient with Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) physiology, another with Sinus Venosus ASD with fenestration, and a third with Doubly Committed VSD with RVOT muscle bundle.
All patients recovered within the expected timeframe — roughly 1–2 days for device closures and 4–5 days for open-heart surgery.
Improved technology, combined with coordinated teamwork, has helped reduce complications and shorten hospital stays for cardiac patients.
The hospital has now begun offering both operative and non-operative cardiac interventions under RBSK, CMHT and PMJAY, allowing patients to access advanced treatment within Manipur, it said.
Babina Hospital will continue to expand its services so that more people in Manipur can access specialised cardiac treatment through government health schemes without the need to travel outside the State, it added.
