IMPHAL, Dec 1: The Department of Plastic Surgery, RIMS has successfully conducted three complex microsurgeries recently.
The three cases were operated under Prof Akoijam Ibohal Singh, HoD Plastic Surgery.
Two of the cases involved oral cavity reconstruction in ladies who were in their late 30s and early 40s.
In both the cases, the free radial artery forearm flaps were harvested from their non-dominant forearms and used to reconstruct the cheeks and gums, said the hospital.
Both operations lasted approximately 5-6 hours.
Dr Pushpakishore Mai-bam from ENT Department and Dr Wahengbam Tulsi-das Singh (Oral Maxillo- facial Surgery) from Dental College helped in the resection of the tumor.
The HOD of Anaesthesiology Department, Prof RK Gojendra and Prof N Ratan Singh provided hypotensive anaesthesia during the marathon operations.
Dr P Manisana Singh and Dr Angelica Laiphrakpam, Assistant Professors of Plastic Surgery took active roles in the reconstruction.
The third case, on the other hand, involved reconstruction of the dorsum of the left foot in a young lady with a free dorsalis pedis artery free flap taken from the right foot.
Such complex reconstructive procedures, on an average, cost between Rs 2-4 lakh in corporate health care set ups across the country.
Notably, RIMS Imphal is one of the few centres in North East India where microvascular surgery is performed on a routine basis, said the hospital.
The Department of Plastic Surgery, which came into being in 1997, under Prof Guruaribam Nilamani Sharma, has now become a full-fledged department with three full-time faculty and is equipped with the latest state-of-the-art technology and high-end microvascular instruments and operating microscopes.
The "MCh Plastic Surgery training programme", which started back in 2010, with an intake capacity of one student a year, is completing its 15th year and is expecting to triple the student intake capacity to 3 per year from the next academic session.
The department caters to a variety of cases, be it congenital, burns, trauma, cancer reconstruction or cosmetic surgery.
There are 3 OPD days in a week, and an equal number of operating days.
The Director of the institute, Prof Guruaribam Sunil Kumar Sharma and the Medical Superintendent, Prof Nepram Sanjib Singh, who himself is also a plastic surgeon and former Head of Department of Plastic Surgery, have been highly instrumental in shaping the department that stands proudly today in the service of humanity, said the hospital.
