IMPHAL, Dec 1: The Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) is a scheme for improving and transforming rural road connectivity, said Chief Secretary Dr Puneet Kumar Goel today.
He said this during a programme organised at Classic Grande to mark 25 years of the flagship scheme.
Manipur State Rural Road Development Agency's Rural Engineering Department organised the event.
RD&PR Commissioner Sumant and RED/MSRRDA Chief Engineer Kh Temba among other officials of the Government attended the programme.
During the programme, Dr Goel said the PMGSY was launched in the year 2000 to improve rural roads all over India.
While there has been significant improvement in rural road connectivity in Manipur under the scheme, implementing the same in the hills has faced some difficulties. However, the difficulties facing now will be resolved in time, Goel said.
For the scheme to be successful, it is very important to maintain quality in all construction activities, Goel said.
At the ground level, the engineers must ensure quality and oversee the work being executed by contractors. After construction is done, the road must be maintained properly, Goel said.
The PMGSY is meant to improve road connectivity and help develop the rural areas. Hence, the scheme must be implemented efficiently, Goel added.
Chief Engineer Kh Temba highlighted the achievements and progress of projects under PMGSY.
During 2000-2021, as many as 2066 projects were sanctioned under PMGSY-I to construct 11,348 kilometres of roads in 652 villages. Of the total projects, 1879 have been completed, Temba said.
Under the PMGSY-II (2019-2021), 58 projects were sanctioned, and of these, 52 have been completed, he said.
Under the PMGSY-III (2023-2025), 97 projects have been sanctioned, and tender for these is being conducted, he added.
For places inhabited by "Vulnerable Tribal Group Maram Tribe" in Senapati and Kangpokpi areas, a tender process is being conducted for 8 projects, Temba said.
Various projects are in the pipeline under PMGSY-IV, based on the 2011 census, he added.
