Senior National Judo C’ships SSCB’s Ninthoujam Sheetal, AIPSCB’s Irengbam Kalpana emerge best judokas

IMPHAL, Dec 14 : State athletes Ningthoujam Sheetal and Irengbam Kalpana who represented Services Sports Control Board (SSCB) and All India Police Sports Control Board (AIPSCB) respectively were adjudged best judokas as the Senior National Judo Championships hosted by Manipur Judo Association came to a close at Khuman Lampak Indoor Hall.
As many as 760 judokas from across 39 units including State, sports control boards and paramilitary teams took part in the championships conducted under the aegis of Judo Federation of India.
N Sheetal had won SSCB the gold medal in the men’s -90 kg category competition defeating Bharam Vats of Delhi while Irengbam Kalpana bagged the women’s -63 kg category gold by defeating Unnati Sharma of Uttarakhand in the final.
Earlier in the semi-finals, Kalpana stunned the judo fraternity by defeating Himanshi Tokas, the former Junior World No 1 and current Jr World No 3.
She carried that momentum into the final, where she overpowered Unnati Sharma, the Senior Asian Championship silver medalist, with a commanding performance to win the gold.
Kalpana, who hails from Manipur, has been training under Coach Lal Krishan Baghel at VBF’s High Performance Centre in Ahmedabad since mid-2024.
The final day of the championship saw Avtar Singh of AIPSCB beat Parmod of Haryana for the -100 kg category gold as Rittik Kumar of Punjab beat Yash Ghangas of Haryana for the +100 kg title and Tulika Maan of Delhi beat compatriot Muskan Rathi for the women’s 78+ kg category title.
AIPSCB eventually emerge table toppers of the championships on 3 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze as Delhi finished second on 2 gold, 4 silver and 2 bronze and SSCB finished third on 2 gold and 3 bronze medals.
Hosts Manipur finished 6th position in the tally courtesy of 1 gold medal secured by Leishangthem Nungshithoi (-52 kg) and a bronze medal each secured by Konthoujam Bishal (-73 kg) and Deepapati Devi (-70 kg).
