IMPHAL, Dec 18 : The ongoing construction of a concrete road (rigid pavement) from Iroishemba to the Solid Waste Treatment Plant at Lamdeng is likely to cause delays in the city’s garbage collection process.
As the road construction progresses, the Imphal Municipal Corporation (IMC) and its associated garbage collection teams have been utilising a bypass road that runs alongside the Lamsang RDO area.
However, this alternate route is approximately 3 kilometres longer than the original route and is one-way, which complicates the operations for garbage collection vehicles.
Imphal has been grappling with waste management challenges.
Speaking to The Sangai Express, some individuals involved in garbage collection explained that all waste collected from Imphal city is currently being disposed of at the Lamdeng Solid Waste Treatment Plant.
They mentioned that they, however, have been using a bypass route to reach the treatment plant due to the ongoing construction of the Iroishemba to Lamdeng road.
They workers shared that they had levelled the bypass road with stones to make it passable.
However, they noted that this alternate route is not only longer than the original road but also one-way, which complicates operations.
As a result, it is challenging for a single garbage vehicle to complete more than one trip efficiently, they said.
Even when garbage is collected, there is no alternate place to dispose of it, they said and appealed to the public to understand the challenges they are facing and to be patient during this difficult period.
Additionally, they urged residents to segregate solid and liquid waste and avoid dumping garbage on the roads or in public places.
