Former MLA calls on Governor

Imphal, Dec 19 : Former Moirang AC MLA M Prithviraj Singh called on Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, today and apprised him of the unfolding law and order situation following the fresh outbreak of violence at Torbung on December 16.
In a press release, the former MLA said that he conveyed the deep sense of insecurity and helplessness felt by the people of Moirang and adjoining areas during the meeting which lasted around 40 minutes.
He also placed before the Governor a set of urgent measures aimed at restoring peace, safeguarding Constitutional rights, and rebuilding public confidence.
Prithviraj urged the Governor to declare National Highways as disturbance-free zones and to deploy Central security forces to ensure uninterrupted civilian and goods movement.
He stressed that the blockade at Kangpokpi continues to undermine the Constitutional guarantee of free movement and erodes citizen security.
Free passage through Kangpokpi, he said, must be ensured without delay.
The former MLA also recommended strategic deployment of security forces in vulnerable periphery areas.
Referring to the December 16 attack on Torbung village, Prithviraj highlighted how the incident shattered the fragile trust of resettling families.
He called for visible security patrols, rapid response units, and confidence-building measures to reassure communities and deter further violence.
He commended the 19th Garhwal Rifles and associated army personnel for their timely intervention in protecting villagers and bringing the situation under control.
Emphasising that the root cause of repeated attacks lies in the illegal weapons possessed by Kuki armed groups, he urged immediate and coordinated action to confiscate these arms en masse.
Without disarmament, violence will persist and innocent citizens will remain at risk, he said.
Prithviraj placed special emphasis on the urgent need to safeguard the sanctity of Thangjing Khuvamlen, a site of profound cultural and spiritual importance to the Meetei people.
He underscored that the installation of a cross at this sacred ground has deeply wounded community sentiments, violated the spirit of secularism, and disrupted cultural harmony.
He urged the Governor to remove the cross without delay, framing this as a matter of Constitutional responsibility and cultural justice.
Equally, Prithviraj highlighted the forthcoming Sajibu pilgrimage to Lord Thangjing as a defining moment for community morale and spiritual resilience.
He requested advance deployment of adequate security personnel to guarantee peaceful observance, stressing that this pilgrimage is not only a religious practice protected under Article 25 of the Constitution, but also a vital reaffirmation of cultural dignity.
The former MLA also affirmed his commitment to constructive dialogue and community-level coordination. He expressed confidence that decisive leadership from the Governor and the Government of India will help restore peace, Constitutional order, and public trust in Manipur.
“The people of Manipur look to swift and firm action. I remain committed to supporting every effort that ensures safety, dignity, and harmony for all communities,” Prithviraj stated.
