Bpr PS makes formal arrest of PLA cadre

IMPHAL, Dec 2: Bishnupur police station today made formal arrest of RPF/PLA cadre Konjengbam Chandrakumar (40) in connection with an ambush on Bishnupur SP Potsangbam Dhanakumar on February 11, 2004.
S/S Lance Corporal of RPF/PLA Konjengbam Chandrakumar alias Bungcha alias Wangba alias Goroba (40) s/o Sarat of Moirang Konjengbam Leikai was produced before the Special Court NIA, Imphal West today by a team of Lamphel police station after completion of police custody period along with a prayer for judicial custody remand.
A Public Prosecutor of the state submitted that the accused was arrested on November 21, 2025 afternoon from the quarters of Government Polytechnic, Takyelpat by a combined team of Thoubal commandos and CRPF on the alleged charges of his involvement in prejudicial activities like extortion from Government schools and colleges in Imphal East district.
Acting on his disclosure, some arms and ammunition concealed at the foothill of Morok Ingkhol, Imphal East were also recovered and seized.
The Court after hearing the submission of the PP remanded the accused in judicial custody.
In the meantime, the SDPO Bishnupur filed an application to make formal arrest of the accused in connection with February 11, 2004 afternoon ambush on SP Bishnupur Potsangbam Dhanakumar’s convoy at Thongjaorok, Bishnupur district in which nine persons including civilians sustained injuries.
On February 11, 2004, a team of Bishnupur district police led by the then SP was proceeding toward Moirang side from District Hospital, Bishunpur for ROP duty in connection with then Chief Minister O Ibobi’s return from Churachandpur.
The police team was ambushed by some unknown armed persons using sophisticated weapons near Thongjaorok Bridge along Tiddim Road, the PP said.
The unknown persons fired indiscriminately at the SP’s convoy from different directions. The police personnel retaliated resulting in an encounter which lasted for around 20 minutes.
Four police personnel, four civilians and one AR personnel sustained bullet injuries in the ambush. Two vehicles used by the SP Bishnupur and his escorts were also hit by bullets.
After the ambush, the unknown armed persons escaped toward Loktak Lake in a 407 mini Tata truck through Khoijuman village.
During the course of investigation, it came to light that the accused was involved in the particular ambush and he is highly required to be arrested formally for further investigation, the PP submitted.
The Court, after hearing the submission of the PP and on perusal of the application filed for making formal arrest of the accused, allowed Bishnupur police station to make formal arrest of Konjengbam Chandrakumar.
