IMPHAL, Dec 2 : The Thadou Inpi Manipur (TIM) has accused Saitu AC MLA Haokholet Kipgen of betraying Thadou people by allegedly supporting the Kuki Inpi Manipur (KIM) general assembly in his village, Hengbung and aligning himself with Kuki supremacist and expansionist agenda that works against the core interests of the Thadou people and the indigenous communities of Manipur.
TIM, in a press release issued by its joint general secretary Manggou Thadou, claimed that the conduct of Haokholet exposes a long-running Kuki supremacist agenda that stands in direct opposition to the Thadou people and repeated betrayals of Thadou interests.
TIM claimed that Saitu AC MLA, although he initially expressed interest in attending the Thadou Convention 2024 in Guwahati, he backed out the moment he learned that the central resolution was to assert that “Thadou is not Kuki.”
TIM alleged that Haokholet put political calculations above the collective identity of the Thadou community.
The Thadou Inpi alleged that he also attempted to pressure Thadou Community International (TCI) and TSA leaders to abandon the Thadou identity declaration.
Despite this interference, the Convention proceeded successfully but KNF issued objections and death threats against the organising committee members of the Thadou Convention, it claimed.
Claiming that Haokholet publicly declared he was born Thadou, and he will die Thadou at the Hun-Thadou Cultural Festival 2023 at Kangpokpi, TIM maintained that his open support for the KIM general assembly now exposes these words as empty and misleading.
By hosting and reportedly financing the KIM event, he has chosen to place himself in direct opposition to the resolutions upheld in the Thadou Conclave, 2015 and the Thadou Convention, 2024, TIM said.
Further claiming that Haokholet, a member of the Thadou tribe and village chief of Hengbung, has chosen to act as a promoter of Kuki supremacist politics while claiming both Thadou and Kuki identities-two fundamentally separate identities, TIM said that Thadous are indigenous people of Manipur while "the political construct Kuki" is rooted in a foreign-origin and violent expansionist ideology.
His attempt to claim both identities is dishonest, confusing, and unacceptable, it said.
Claiming that a politician like Haokholet who repeatedly changes his stance to suit personal interests cannot be trusted with power or influence, TIM said that the Saitu AC MLA must never be elevated to any Ministerial or significant post in the Manipur Government, at present or in the future.
Stating that TIM withdrew all support for Haokholet, TIM maintained that his political and ideological positions no longer align with the interests of the Thadou community.
TIM demanded that Haokholet clarify whether he identifies as Thadou or as Kuki.
