Manipur Science Congress-2025 kicks off at MU

IMPHAL, Dec 20: Themed “Science, Innovation and Climate Change”, Manipur Science Congress-2025 was opened today at Manipur University auditorium.
The three-day congress is being jointly organised by Manipur University, Mani-pur Science & Technology Council (MASTEC) and Directorate of Environment and Climate Change.
Governor and MU Chief Rector Ajay Kumar Bhalla, Science & Technology Secretary and MASTEC Mem- ber Secretary Kengoo Zuringla and MU Vice Chancellor Prof N Lokendra graced the inaugural session as chief guest, president and guest of honour respectively.
Speaking at the inaugural session, Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla stated that science is not merely the pursuit of knowledge but a vital instrument for addressing pressing global challenges such as climate change, resource depletion and environmental stress which are increasingly evident in the forms of erratic monsoons, floods and heat waves.
Talking about India’s legacy of scientific innovation and success, the Gover- nor mentioned about Chandrayan-III and achievements in the field of digital public infrastructure.
The Governor underscored the need to promote applied, problem-oriented research relevant to local and regional realities, particularly in the North Eastern region, and called upon scientists and researchers to guide society in the intelligent use, conservation and regeneration of resources.
He said that platforms such as the Manipur Science Congress play a crucial role in fostering collaboration, encouraging quality research, and enabling wider dissemination of findings through National and international publications.
In his key-note address, Dr RK Nimai said that the impacts of development activities on environment and climate have been documented in detail.
In order to study how to conserve the environment and exploit natural resources in a sustainable manner, it is imperative to produce  a great number of scientists, he said.
Apart from giving away several science and innovation awards, the Governor also released souvenir, abstracts of book and procee- ding book of Manipur Science Congress 2025. Dr Ibeyaima Innovation Award was presented to Wangkheimayum Paikhomba of Wangkheimayum Leikai, Wangkei; Dr Pravabati Science Popularization Award to Adhikarimayum Gitchandra of Brahmapur Aribam Leikai and State Science Communicator Award to Sanjenbam Janeshwar of Khoijuman Ward No 1.
Prof N Lokendra said that the world is today witnessing revolutionary changes in the field of technology including AI, biotechnology, advanced materials, space technology and renewable energy.
He exuded confidence that the congress will give a platform for researchers, academia and policy makers to work together on climate change, natural disasters and renewable energy.
The congress is being participated by students, researchers and delegates from the State and outside.
