Moirang, Dec 20 : The Committee on Protection and Preservation of the Historical Rights of Koubru and Thangjing Hill Ranges (CPPKT) has urged Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla to take necessary measures to allow the Meitei people to undertake pilgrimage to Thangjing Ching and offer prayers at the shrine of Ibudhou Thangjing during the 2026 Sajibu Cheiraoba, the lunar new year festival of the Meitei community.
The Joint Committee Tiddim, CPPKT, Ingu Phamnaiba Cheirap Loishang of Ibudhou Thangjing Moirang, Thangjing Seva Mandal and Moirang Khamba Thoibi Dance Academy jointly observed the first Thangjing Hill Preservation Day at Ibudhou Thangjing Moirang Laikol, today.
Addressing the function, CPPKT secretary Y Shyam Khuman stated that the Governor had assured the people in 2024 that they would be allowed to undertake pilgrimage to Thangjing Ching with security cover but the promise was never fulfilled.
He also said that they recently submitted a memorandum to the Governor, urging necessary measures to resume the pilgrimage to Thangjing Ching during the next Sajibu Cheiraoba and to remove the cross erected at the site atop the hill which is sacred to the Meitei people, .
Failure to address their rightful demands could lead to agitations, Shyam Khuman warned.
He, meanwhile, said that there have been constant efforts by the Kuki community to rename the sacred Thangjing Ching as 'Thangting.'
He also said that the then Governor, on August 24, 2014, issued an order renaming Thangjing as Thangting Sub-Division/TD Block, Churachandpur, and a gazette notification with the same name was published on September 9, 2014, which led to strong protests from the people.
It was extremely unfortunate for the then Government to endorse the Kuki community's efforts to rename Thangjing Hill as Thangting and to make it a Sub-Division, he said.
