National conference on Maths kickstarts

IMPHAL, Dec 22 : In celebration of National Mathematics Day, the Department of Mathematics, Manipur University, inaugurated a two-day National conference on ‘Recent Trends in Mathematics’ today at the Court Hall, MU, Canchipur.
The inaugural function was graced by eminent academicians including Professor Sushant G Ghosh, Director, Centre for Theoretical Physics, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi as the chief guest; Professor Tarun Kumar Das, Head, Department of Mathematics, University of Delhi; and Professor Swaroop Nandan Bora, Department of Mathematics, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati, as guests of honour. Professor K Binod Mangang, Head, Department of Mathematics, MU, presided over the function.
Professor Ruchi Das, Department of Mathematics, University of Delhi, along with several other scholars, was also present.
Addressing the gathering, Professor Sushant G Ghosh spoke about the research collaborations between Jamia Millia Islamia and Manipur University, acknowledging the pivotal role played by retired Professor Ng Ibohal of the Department of Mathematics, MU, in fostering academic cooperation.
Dr T Ibungochouba Singh, convenor of the National conference, shared that National Mathematics Day is being celebrated this year to commemorate the 138th birth anniversary of legendary Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan.
During the two-day conference, 77 participants will present their recent research findings. The conference has brought together around 200 participants, including renowned experts, researchers, and students from across the country.
The conference will not only help students gain more knowledge but also give them opportunities to pursue PhDs and research outside the State, he said. In his presidential address, Professor K Binod Mangang emphasized the strategic significance of National Mathematics Day in the context of India’s role within an increasingly multipolar global order, where leadership in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) with mathematics as its foundational pillar plays a decisive role in shaping global influence and competitiveness.
Dr Kh Herachandra expressed sincere gratitude to Professor N Lokendra Singh, Vice-Chancellor MU, for his unwavering support, and to the sponsors—State Bank of India (SBI), Manipur University Branch, and Delhi Book Store (DBS), New Delhi. The programme was compered by Dr Benaki Lairenjam, Assistant Professor, Department of Mathematics, MU.
