Why Christmas

It is our sacred duty as followers of Jesus to test every practice against the truth of God’s Word. Today, I feel compelled to address the celebration of Christmas—a tradition that has become widespread but stands on no Biblical foundation. It is essential that we examine this practice with spiritual discernment and ask ourselves : Is it from God, or is it a tradition of men ?
*Christmas Has No Biblical Basis*
The Bible is entirely silent about the celebration of Christ’s birth. Jesus Himself never commemorated His birthday, nor did He instruct His disciples to do so. The apostles, the early Church, and even the seven Churches mentioned in the book of Revelation have no record of observing Christ’s birth. Furthermore, the Christian communities in Corinth, Galatia, Philippi, Antioch, and elsewhere never practiced such a celebration. This absence is not an oversight—it is a deliberate exclusion by God.
The Scriptures consistently emphasize Christ’s death as the cornerstone of our faith, not His physical birth. 2 Corinthians 11:23-26 commands us to remem- ber His death through the Lord’s Supper, but there is no similar command to co-mmemorate His birth. The absence of such instruction in Scripture should compel us to reflect deeply on the validity of this practice.
*The Pagan Origins of Christmas*
History reveals that the celebration of Christmas did not originate from God’s people but from pagan and heathen customs. Pagan traditions celebrating the winter solstice were repurposed and introduced into Christianity under human leadership, eventually spreading throughout the Christian world. This practice is an example of what the books of Daniel and Revelation warn about—a worldly system leading believers away from the truth.
*The Bible is clear:*
Christians are called to separate themselves from the ways of the world and follow the pure teachings of God. Romans 12:2 reminds us, “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” Cele- brating Christmas is a departure from God’s co- mmands, as it aligns with human traditions instead of divine truth.
*Biblical Warnings About Birthday Celebrations*
The Bible provides several cautionary accounts of birthdays, associating them with calamity and judgment:
At the time of Christ’s birth, King Herod ordered the massacre of all male infants under two years old (Matthew 2:16). This tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the sorrow surrounding Christ’s physical birth.
Pharaoh’s chief baker was executed on Pharaoh’s birthday (Genesis 40:20-22).
John the Baptist, the forerunner of Christ, was beheaded during Herod’s birthday celebration (Mark 6:21-28).
Job’s ten children were killed during the birthday celebration of his eldest son (Job 1:18-19).
These examples demonstrate that birthdays are not occasions for celebration in the Bible but are often marked by tragedy and judgment. Ecclesiastes 7:1 further emphasizes that “the day of one’s death is better than the day of one’s birth.” Instead of focusing on Christ’s birth, Scripture calls us to remember His death, which bring salvation to humanity.
*Christ’s Eternal Nature*
Celebrating Christ’s birth risks reducing His divine nature to a single earthly event. Galatians 4:4 reminds us that God sent His Son into the world; Jesus did not begin to exist when He was born of Mary. He is the eternal Word of God, existing before time itself (John 1:1-14). To celebrate His physical birth is to diminish the profound truth of His eternal nature and mission to redeem humanity.
*Immorality and Ungodly Practices on Christmas Day*
Beyond its unbiblical origins, Christmas has become a day marked by immorality and excess. Many young people use this day as an excuse for indulgence, engaging in acts of immo- rality, drug abuse, drunkenness, and revelry. Instead of glorifying God, these actions bring dishonor to His name. Ephesians 5:11 commands us to “have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them.” Celebrating Christmas has led many into sin, further proving that this practice is not from God.
*God Hates Extra-Biblical Practices*
Christmas is an extra-biblical tradition that God detests because it stems from human invention, not divine revelation. Isaiah 29:13 warns us against following human traditions in worship: “These people come near to me with their mouth and honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. Their worship of me is based on merely human rules they have been taught.” God desires worship in spirit and truth, not practices rooted in worldly customs (John 4:24).
*A Call to Righteousness*
The choice is now in your hands. Will you follow the traditions of men, or will you stand firmly on the Word of God? Revelation 18:4 urgently calls out: “Come out of her, my people, so that you will not share in her sins.” Tomorrow may be too late to make the right choice. Reject the unbiblical celebration of Christmas and instead dedicate your lives to obeying God’s commandments.
