IMPHAL, Dec 2 : No proposal from the Government of Manipur has been received so far to recognise Manipuri as a Classical language, said Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Union Minister of Culture and Tourism in the Lok Sabha yesterday.
The Union Minister of Culture revealed this when answering a question raised by Congress MP Dr Angomcha Bimol Akoijam.
In the Lok Sabha session yesterday, Dr Bimol had asked if the Government had taken any steps to confer Classical language status on Manipuri (Meiteilon).
Raising the question, Dr Bimol stressed the Manipuri (Meiteilon) belongs to the Tibeto-Burmese linguistic family of the Indo-Mongoloid group and is regarded as one of the most ancient and advanced languages of India, which has also been noted by eminent linguist and Constituent Assembly Member, Dr Suniti Kumar Chatterjee.
Answering the question, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat informed that the Ministry of Culture examines detailed proposals received from State Governments, along with the requisite evidentiary documents, for consideration of any language as a Classical language of India.
No proposal from the Government of Manipur has been received in this regard so far, said the Minister.
Earlier, Rajya Sabha MP Leishemba Sanajaoba had raised the point to include Manipuri in the list of classical languages of India.
Notably, five new languages--Assamese, Bengali, Marathi, Pali and Prakrit were classified as classical languages of India in October 2024.
India now has a total of 11 classical  languages.
The 11 classical languages of India include Tamil, Sanskrit, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Odia, Assamese, Bengali, Marathi, Pali and Prakrit.
