IMPHAL, Dec 30 :  As 2025 comes to a close, Manipur cricket has emerged a strong contender to watch out for with the U-19 men’s team securing Cooch Behar Trophy Vinoo Mankad Plate group titles and the senior men’s team once again securing the Elite Division promotion in the Ranji Trophy.
The U-19 women’s team also achieved great success by sweeping the T20 Trophy Plate Group league competition although they settled for the runners up title after losing to Mizoram in the final.
Led by captain Konthoujam Bishworjit, the senior men’s team achieved unprecedented success, topping the Ranji Trophy league stage without a single loss and eventually earning a promotion to Elite Division next season.
In a conversation with The Sangai Express, Bishworjit said that Manipur cricket had a landmark year in 2025.
“One of the biggest highlights was our consistent performance, which showed that Manipur is no longer just participating, but competing at a high level. In the Ranji Trophy 2025–26 league stage, we topped the table without losing a single match—an achievement that speaks volumes about our unity and team spirit,” he said.
“We played as a collective unit, and that togetherness was reflected in our performances,” he said.
Bishworjit also focussed on clear communication, trust, and leading by example to overcome challenges.
“Captaincy comes with pressure, especially in high-stakes situations. One of the main challenges was keeping the team calm during crucial moments. I focused on clear communication, backing players even after difficult days, and leading by example both on and off the field,” he said.
“We trusted our plans and remained committed to them. I had complete confidence in the team, and I made sure the players believed in themselves as well,” he added.
On the current state of Cricket in the State, he praised the State's strong talent pool and growing cricket scene but highlighted the need for better infrastructure, quality wickets, and exposure to high-level competitions.
He also emphasized investing in fitness, sports science, and grassroots development.
On being asked about his standout moment, he said that there were many memorable moments, and it was difficult to single out just one. “Ranji Trophy journey of the season will always remain special to me,” he said.
“Several players impressed me with their consistency and work ethic, particularly the youngsters who stepped up when it mattered most. Their performances give me great confidence in the future of Manipur cricket,” he added.
On his goals for the upcoming season as a captain, Bishworjit maintained that his goals are to build a mentally strong team, groom future leaders, and help Manipur gain National recognition.
“The next step for Manipur cricket is consistency at the national level. As captain, my goal is to build a team that is mentally strong, physically fit, and tactically sharp,” he observed.
“Personally, I aim to groom future leaders, provide opportunities to young players, and help Manipur gain greater recognition. If we stay disciplined and united, I truly believe the best is yet to come for Manipur cricket,” he signed off.
