IMPHAL, Dec 3: Despite the Smart City nomenclature and other projects being implemented, Imphal continues to be turned into a dumping spot with many opting to litter all the open spaces available.
One prime example is the passenger vehicle parking area on the bank of Nambul River at Wahengbam Leikai that has been turned into a dumping ground.
Household waste and garbage generated from shops including plastics adorn the bank of the River.
Some locals said many households in the area and shops are responsible for it.
People are seen dumping household waste very early in the morning and late at night, they claimed. "They think IMC (Imphal Municipal Corporation) would clean it. This is why they dump it here. It is the lack of penalty that has encouraged such habits," said a local.
The dumping of the waste on the roadside and in the parking area has caused inconvenience to commuters and the locality. Such practice may cause serious health hazards, added the local.
An auto-rickshaw driver said he finds the place piled up with waste daily.
Sometimes the IMC does clean it, but the place would become a dumping ground again the next day, he said.
The IMC and authorities concerned should "look into it and take appropriate actions", he added.
