Trump made Modi-Putin love-story

Have you seen the front page photo of Modi-Putin hug in most of the dailies - regional or national or international - in the last few days? This is made possible by Trump Saab. He ignored Modi and gave importance to a General of an inimical country. At the same time the US's unreasonable tariffs imposed on India for buying Russian crude oil, even while similar purchases by other countries have been let off, fuels love for Russia.
Now India has become Bharat, which cannot be stifled and suppressed by any power. Bharat is now the 4th largest economy; its foreign exchange and gold reserves is the 5th highest; it is the most populous country in the world next to China; it is a nuclear power State and an emerging space-power. Geopolitics can’t be dictated by the personal whims and fancies of the US President. Trump must understand that it is not a unipolar world.
In fact Trump’s attitude and approach towards India in the last few months made Bharat become closer to Russia. Now, Bharat will buy more crude oil from Russia and Russia will engage half a million Indian semi-skilled labor. At the same time cooperation in defense and people to people ties will be augmented between the two.
Russia has been the pole star for India even during the cold-war era. Even during this hot war era we are happy with the S-400 air defence system . Once upon a time the Mig Fighters did a wonderful job for India. The Indo-Soviet pact in the 70’s was a miracle when India was leading the Non-aligned movement.
The whole world knows that foreign policy is nothing but doing some global maneuverings to promote and sustain national interest. A lot of give and take happens - between engaging counties. Both sides have the feeling that they are benefitted by agreements and engagements.
The two days Russia-India engagement and the Summit between Putin and Modi made global news. The Modi-Putin summit offered many takeaways. It encouraged diplomatic autonomy to both. Russia’s isolation because of the Ukraine war is now diluted. US bullying India on Tariffs may be sorted out. Russia’s over dependence on China will be reduced. India is getting nuclear power stations. India still stands for peace vis-a-vis Russia-Ukraine conflict. India is always for peace.
Normally I read newspapers particularly about the equations among the global powers. Since India and Russia are global powers I have been going through the news reports of Putin's visit to India . The summit between Putin and Modi invited global attention.
The geopolitical rivalries among the top global powers will define the future course of international relations. At the same time an emerging Bharat backed by Russian crude oil, nuclear energy and defense may start playing a crucial role particularly in Southeast Asia. Meanwhile Russia is getting diplomatic breathing space through India. Its economy may also get some relief. The present bilateral trade (India-Russia) is about 69 Billion dollar – it will further increase to 100 Billion by 2030.
Some argue that the strengthening of India-Russia relationship may further strain the Indo-US relation. They might have a logic . The US cannot be completely ignored because of various strategic, democratic and scientific reasons. They already have a very bad relationship with China. The US think tank may definitely prefer India to China in all respects. This angle can’t also be ignored. Yes of course we have to deal with all the major powers of the world .
One Abhay Kumar from Bihar who left Bharat in 1991 to get a medical degree from Russia is now a Russian citizen and works in Kursk City as an Deputat ( MLA type) . Abhay is very happy about the improved Indo-Russia relations. He praised the S-400 system; but he insists that India must get the S-500 from Russia, which is more sophisticated and advanced.
What could be China’s reaction to the India-Russia bonhomie? China may not say or do anything - because they also have a wonderful relationship with Russia. However, some diplomats argue that to counter India’s well-being and feel good factor it may empower a nation which is not friendly to India. After all, international diplomacy is just like the game of chess based on checks and counter-checks – all moves are in the national interest.
India invited Putin; he came in his national interest. Modi had the summit with Putin – to serve his nation's interest. What the foreign affairs experts are trying to figure out is whether such an engagement between these two benefits both the countries ; or they have become losers in the geopolitical game.
Finally we have to see the impact of such a diplomatic, strategic and adventurous move. Anyways the leftists in India are very happy to see Putin-Modi convergence though one is a billionaire and the other a proletariat. For me, India is gaining more. For Russia it is only a crucial move to end global isolation. India gets many more – including the global message that “India can’t be bullied any more ”.
