IMPHAL, Dec 5
In a major security concern, unidentified miscreants cut through a newly constructed section of the Indo–Myanmar border fencing at Changpol in Chandel district, Manipur. The breach occurred between Border Pillars 67 and 68, where approximately 100 to 200 feet of the fence has been damaged, raising serious questions about the effectiveness and vigilance of the security forces deployed to safeguard this sensitive frontier.
The Government of India has been making extensive efforts to strengthen the Indo–Myanmar border, with the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) constructing fencing across multiple vulnerable stretches. This marks the second such incident this year, the first having occurred near Moreh at Border Pillar 77.
Earlier on Thursday, the Joint Tribes Council Manipur submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, appealing for urgent action on alleged unchecked illegal migration and its adverse impact on indigenous communities. The letter is signed by the presidents of the Liangmai Naga Council, Rongmei Naga Council, Zeme Naga Council, and the Inpui Naga Union, with copies forwarded to Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
The incident highlights both security gaps along the border and rising concerns among local communities about the implications of unregulated cross-border movement.
