SSM celebrates silver jubilee

IMPHAL, Dec 6 : Marking 25 years of dedicated services for empowerment of persons with disablities, Spastic Society of Manipur (SSM) celebrated its silver jubilee today at its premises in Tapokpi Bazar, Langthabal Kunja.
The celebration was graced by dignitaries including Karam Shyam Singh, MLA, Langthabal AC; Arunkumar Sinha, Principal Secretary, PWD; Anushkar, Assistant Deputy Commissioner, Imphal West; W Birahari Singh, State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities; N Khoibi Singh, Director, CRC Imphal; and Laishram Tokendro Ricky, Secretary, SSM. At the event, speakers emphasized that providing proper care, stopping discrimination and actively working for the welfare of persons with disabilities (PwDs) are crucial for creating a just, inclusive, and thriving society where everyone can participate and live with dignity.
They asserted that the society must acknowledge PwDs’ inherent rights, remove physical, social, economic, and communication barriers to enable their full and equal participation
They also emphasized that creating inclusive environments in workplaces, educational institutions, community programmes etc is vital for unlocking the full potential of PwDs, fostering their skill development, promoting societal contribution, and driving innovation.
The silver jubilee celebration was marked by distributions of aids and appliances to PwDs, and felicitation of achievers with disability who brought laurels to the State.
Notabaly, the Spastic Society of Manipur was established as a dream project in 2000, shifting focus to disability issues from its parent agency, Re-creation, with secretary Laishram Tokendra Ricky and director Sushma Rajput leading the initiative. The main aim of the project is early identification, early intervention, habitation and education of children with cerebral palsy and multiple disabilities.
