IMPHAL, Dec 8 : Even as public toilets are deemed to be worse and more unhygienic, the filthy and impaired state of the lavatory inside the Cheirap Court Complex has disgusted staff and the public alike.
With broken wash and urinal basins, the lavatory complex is filled with filth and foul smell--all because of lack of maintenance and unhygienic use.
There is no water in the basins. The wash basins have been converted into garbage bins for dumping Talab/Paan Masala pouches.
The members of the public are using them only out of urgency.
A person who was at the Court for a case said the availability of a public toilet inside the complex is convenient for the people but unhygienic use has rendered it useless.
People ought to use and treat the lavatory as they would if it were at their home. Improper and unhygienic use in absence of regular cleaning and maintenance is bound to ruin every facility anywhere, said the man. The lack of water in the basins has also worsened the state of the lavatory, he added.
Another person intervened and asserted that "it all depend on public consciousness".
When members of the public who use the facility are conscious of their actions, and educated enough to know it is their property, the lavatory in the Court and all public spaces would become neat and clean, said the man. "It is very simple to keep the lavatory clean. Use it well and wisely, use water to flush away waste properly and don't litter," added the man.
