Opium fields destroyed

IMPHAL, Feb 9: In a crucial operation aimed at eradicating drug menace in Manipur, the Assam Rifles in collaboration with Manipur Police destroyed five acres of illicit opium poppy plantation in an area under G Monglian Village, Sangaikot subdivision, Churachandpur district.
The operation was conducted yesterday from early morning till late afternoon.
The destruction of the poppy fields is a critical step in addressing the root cause of drug addiction and illegal trade network that threatens the social and economic fabric of Manipur, said Assam Rifles in a statement.
