IMPHAL, Feb 2: A masked man placed a hand-grenade with a threatening note in broad daylight at the residence of a school teacher at Chingamakha Phurama-khong today.
The incident happened at around 11 am.
Sources said the unidentified masked man came alone and placed a hand-grenade and a note at the residence of COMET School teacher Irom Umakanta.
The note reportedly had the name of an underground outfit and "Last warning" written on it and instructions to call a number to contact the group within 2-3 days.
This happened even as the Government has established a dedicated "Integrated Anti-Extortion Cell" comprising representatives from the State Police, Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) and Assam Rifles/Army.
With the establishment of the cell, the Government had launched a toll free number---1800-202-3326 for the public and Government officials to report cases of threats or extortion.
Meanwhile, locals of Chingamakha held a sit-in protest denouncing the incident today.
Chingamakha Apunba Nupi Lamjing Lup and Model Club Chingamakha led the protest.
During the protest demonstration, the womenfolk said they vehemently condemn the threat issued to the teacher and incident.
"Placing bombs in crowded places is a cowardly act that threatens the safety and security of the people including children. People want peace. No organisation should threaten or compromise the safety of the public," said a woman.
The group or individuals concerned must claim responsibility and clarify. Such incidents that threaten the safety of people must not be repeated again, she added.
Irom Umakanta is a school teacher who is educating and guiding young students. If there are issues with him, the group or individuals concerned may simply talk to him and resolve the issues peacefully, she said.
