IMPHAL, Feb 20 : Plastic surgeons at RIMS Hospital, Imphal successfully reconstructed a new cheek for 53 year-old patient with oral cancer using tissues harvested from her forearm on February 7.
Shanti (name changed to protect identity) is a professional weaver and the fourth out of five siblings hailing from Imphal West district. Notably, she used to chew 6-8 betel nut/paan per day for the past 15-20 years, informed a statement issued by RIMS Hospital, Imphal.
She was diagnosed with oral cancer (Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the buccal mucosa) by a senior surgeon in her locality who advised her to seek treatment at the Plastic Surgery OPD of RIMS Hospital.
At the time when she visited the Plastic Surgery OPD, she was in a condition where she was unable to open her mouth more than a finger's breadth. Her condition was thoroughly investigated and it was discovered that the tumour had not spread far and wide. An ENT consultation was sought and the operation scheduled soon after.
As the tumour starting from inside the cheek had reached the skin, the entire cheek was removed during the operation.
The marathon operation was undertaken under the strict and able supervision of Professor N Sanjib Singh, former HOD, Plastic Surgery and Medical Superin- tendent of RIMS Hospital, Imphal.
After the head and neck surgeon took out the massive tumour, the Plastic Surgical team led by Dr AK Ibohal Singh, Associate Professor & HOD Plastic Surgery, harvested the radial artery forearm flap from the left forearm of the patient and painstakingly joined the blood vessels of the flap to those of the neck. Thus, the big hollow in the left cheek was reconstructed successfully.
The team of doctors included Dr Longjam Eshori Devi and Dr Irengbam Joyshankar (anaes-thesiologists), Dr Ak Ibohal, Dr P Manisana, Dr Nehar Sinam (plastic surgeons) and Dr M Pushpakishore (ENT surgeon). Theatre nurses A Romita and Roshima assisted the operation.
The operation which lasted approximately 8 hours was carried out in the Modular OT No 5 of RIMS Hospital.
The patient was strictly monitored in the Trauma ICU for 48 hours and thereafter shifted back to the Plastic Surgery Ward.
Two weeks after the operation, the patient recovered adequately and was in a condition to return home.
In view of the growing incidence of tobacco abuse in Manipur, RIMS Hospital has advised the public to approach expert doctors at the slightest suspicion and get treatment early on.
