IMPHAL, Mar 11: In a landmark decision, the Ministry of Rural Development, Government of India, has granted the allocation of Rs 1922.13 crore for Manipur under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) for the Financial Year 2025-26.
This is the highest ever allocation in fifteen years for Manipur, and amounts to nearly 60% jump as compared to last year.
The Central Government took this decision in response to the Governor's request to provide extra resources to the State to help the people of Manipur in tiding over the economic hardship caused by the ethnic conflict and the disturbance during the past two years.
The above funds will provide benefits to 6 lakh families for an average of 65 days and timely utilisation will help them to get another 35 days, thereby giving employment of 100 days.
In the past, these families were getting employment for 25 to 42 days only.
In FY2022-23, the Centre had allocated Rs 1,108.58 crore while in FY2023-24, it was Rs 1,148.33 crore and in the current fiscal it is Rs 1,201.33 crore.
As proposed by the State Government, the Centre has granted Rs 1922.13 crore under MGNREGA for FY2025-26, witnessing a quantum jump of more than Rs 720 crore.
Under the ambitious livelihood program, 6.23 lakh job cards have been issued, covering a total of 9.12 lakh workers.
Among them, 5.99 lakh job cards remain active, supporting 6.99 lakh active workers.
MGNREGA covers all sixteen districts, seventy blocks and 3,150 Gram Panchayats in the State.
Targeting inclusiveness under the programme, the State has covered a total of 40.72% of ST workers and 2.619% of SC workers.
MGNREGA not only offers immediate financial relief but also strengthens local infrastructure, enhancing long-term employability and skill development among rural workers.
In addition, MGNREGA promotes financial stability by providing a steady income for rural households. This helps them meet their daily needs and improve their living conditions.
The guaranteed wages under the scheme enhance household spending power, which in turn stimulates local markets and supports small businesses, generating a cycle of economic growth.
